Eat the Daily Recommended Vegetables: A Guide to Better Nutrition
Did you know only 1 in 7 (that’s 14%) of people in the U.S. meet the daily recommendation for eating fruits and vegetables? There’s a high probability you may fall into that category.
Yet fruits and vegetables are where we get much needed antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, minerals known to be important for lowering blood pressure, reducing risk of heart disease and preventing some types of cancer as reported by Harvard’s T.H. Chan school of public health.
Contrast the U.S. statistic with fruit and vegetable consumption in Italy, a country always ranking high for longevity.
In Italy, a high percentage of people (65.4%) consume between one and four portions of fruits and vegetables per day and 11.8% of people eat five or more portions.
Overall, a whopping 77.2% of the population in Italy consumes at least one portion of fruit and vegetables per day! (Reported by Eurostat a database kept by the European commission)
You most likely aren’t eating fruits and vegetables because of one (or all) of these reasons:
1. You are bored with the taste of bland, limp, overcooked vegetables that you were told to eat when you were growing up.
2. Restaurants, fast food and “take out” rarely include fruits or especially vegetables with entrees. It’s estimated if you compared all food sold in restaurants, only 10% contains fruits and especially vegetables.
3. And maybe the number one reason is this: You may not know how to prepare delicious, mouthwatering roasted or grilled vegetables you enjoy eating.
This month’s “Longevity Tips” has a solution for you. Let’s transport you to kitchens in Italy where cooks prepare amazingly delicious tasting vegetables that you can prepare right in your own kitchen or backyard grill.
I have put together a short Grilling Vegetables that will walk you through the process of making vegetables with hidden flavors you never knew existed in vegetables.
That’s because you will be caramelizing their natural sugars and finishing them with balsamic vinegar if preferred and a drizzle of high-quality extra virgin olive oil (EVOO.)
The guide is exclusively yours as a subscriber. You can download it here.
If a video would help I have two videos on my YouTube channel. You can access the videos here and here.
For now, kick up your nutritional intake with delicious roasted or grilled vegetables. Let me know how you like them.
That’s it for now. I’ll be back next month with another great “Longevity Tip.”
