Weight Loss and Muscle Balance: A Smarter Approach to Fitness
Conversations about Weight Loss and Muscle Balance are almost entirely focused on the need to “lose fat” or to “lose weight”
When it comes to weight loss, most people focus solely on shedding fat. But what if the real issue isn’t about being “overfat” but rather “under muscled”? This concept, often overlooked, is transforming the way we think about fitness and health. Achieving weight loss and muscle balance is not just about losing pounds—it’s about building strength, improving metabolism, and creating a sustainable approach to your health. But if the entire composition of the body is taken into consideration we might look at things a lot differently. We would most likely recognize we aren’t necessarily “overfat” but “under muscled.”
Once we know our body composition, we can focus on “re-composition” of fat, bone, and muscle in our body, accomplished with strength training, cardiovascular exercise (walking, bicycling, climbing stairs for examples) and diet.
The next time you might say, I need to lose weight, it’s better to say, I need to replace fat with more muscle – a much better way of understanding our personal fitness. Knowing your body composition requires special equipment. Special home scales can be purchased and/or more sophisticated equipment can be used at some fitness centers and medical spas. Body scanners and chambers also exist that claim to be even more specific. Either way, you will get the idea of your body composition.
If you would like to learn more, here’s a publication from the National Institute of Health with studies not only on body composition but about various diets, how they affect the loss of lean body muscle and some nutritional strategies . I especially like this publication because it reports the authors have no conflict of interest meaning it’s purely scientific and not an advertisement.
Aside from body re-composition, two other things may be of interest to you.

Last thing for this month: “Corso di italiano per turisti”
Many people in my readership (those traveling with me as well as those not traveling) would like to learn a little about the Italian language and culture.
I’ve just learned my good friend and language instructor, Monica Fonda (born and raised in Venice Italy) will be offering group Italian classes beginning on Tuesday, October 22 through December 17th.
I also want to mention if the timing for group classes doesn’t work that Monica has told me she is also offering private classes. I’ve taken both her group and private classes she is awesome!
Are you ready for a new journey and have some fun?!? Then, do not wait any longer and sign up for “Corso di italiano per turisti”!
This is going to be a quick basic course for tourists (and non-tourists) that allows you to quickly learn about some of the Italian culture, grammar, and how to handle in a successful way the main communication situations.
• The course will be held via Zoom on Tuesdays 5:00-6:00 pm starting on October 22 thru December 17. Cost per person $120.
• In order to offer this course, I would need at least 10 participants.
• If interested, please RSVP by Friday, October 18.
• I will let you know by Saturday, October 19 if we have enough participants.
• Looking forward to hearing from you. Grazie mille. Monica Fonda ph: 847-682-0280
