How to Live to 100. Here’s What I learned in the Blue Zone of Sardinia
Speaking of longevity, Netflix has a popular new series, How to Live to 100. based on the diet and lifestyle of long-lived populations in what’s called the “Blue Zones” of the world.
Welcome to this month’s edition of “Longevity Tips” where I help you build a better longer life by sharing what I’ve learned as a board-certified nutritionist and global traveler in pursuit of longevity.
Friends and colleagues are asking me if I’ve seen the series and I’m wondering if you’ve seen it as well. If you haven’t I highly recommend it.
I can tell you from my experience of visiting the Blue Zone of Sardinia (when I say I’m a global traveler in pursuit of longevity I’m not kidding) that segment is very accurate.
We’ve learned much about the pillars of longevity from the Blue Zones including the following:
Long living populations have close social networks within their community that support each other’s needs.
Centenarians (people that live to 100 and beyond) have resilience when faced with adversity. Strong social networks help with this.
They have a consistent and familiar local diet that’s mainly plant based and meals prepared at home.
Physical movement is built into their daily lives with an almost forced stair master due to steps and inclines everywhere.
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗲:
A nursing home…. a workout gym…..or a hospital!
However, the series does end with the reality that diets and lifestyles are changing in some of the Blue Zones and as they change, so does the health of the population. “Longevity Tips” is based upon what we’ve learned from the Blue Zones and how we can emulate them.
On another note, there are currently 3 open spots left on the Spring 2024 “Authentic Italy” excursion and an opportunity to experience the “real” Italy. I haven’t publicly announced it a second time yet. If you are considering joining us next spring in “Authentic Italy” please let me know as I will announce it again soon. Here’s a link to the details.
Whenever you are ready, here are two ways I can help you.
There are two things to keep in mind. First, 99% of olive oil on the shelves is at least a year old and secondly, this year there will be 30% less of it due to changes in climate. Both heat and drought have taken their toll on the world wide olive production this year.
If you would like to learn more about olive oil in general here’s a link to a video on my You Tube channel.
That’s it for now.
See you next month
