Authentic Habits for Staying Active

Welcome to “Longevity Tips” a monthly publication designed to take you off the path of confusing messages, trends, and hacks and onto the path of ancient wisdom and the best of science.

We are all told to move more but how in the heck are we supposed to do that in our sedentary society!

Let’s get real; it isn’t easy with a lifestyle keeping us busy but at the expense of our health.

Because of this imbalance it’s simple to fall into the frustrating trap of knowing you aren’t moving enough and then trying to find a way to “fix that.”

Perhaps a better way is to build movement into your daily life that you don’t even have to think about.

I’ve spent the last decade observing people who never check a heart rate monitor, count steps on a smartwatch, or grind out miles on a treadmill. Yet, they remain lean, mobile, and sharp well into their nineties.

Their secret? It’s not a workout. It’s their movement throughout the day.

Here are three simple ways to might want to consider mimicking the Italian lifestyle and add functional years to your life.

Build Your Own “Walkable Village”

In those tiny Italian villages, life is vertical. Residents walk up and down steep, cobblestone streets just to grab groceries or see a friend. This constant “digital hill” keeps their metabolism firing all day.

Since most of our American suburbs are flat and car-dependent, we have to simulate that incline. My favorite hack? The under-desk stepper. I keep mine right under my workspace. I’m on it first thing in the morning, and I use it during my most passive meetings. It prevents the “metabolic shutdown” that happens after just 30 minutes of sitting.

Think of it as your portable Italian village—it signals to your body all day long that you are an active human being.

Pro Tip: You can find these for around $100. It turns a four-hour work block into a “slow stroll,” keeping your large muscle groups active without you even realizing it. (see photo below that’s under my desk)

The Power of the “Passeggiata”

In Italy, the Passeggiata—the evening stroll—is non-negotiable. It’s social, it’s slow, and it’s a lifetime habit that starts in childhood. Families head out after dinner to get fresh air and connect with neighbors.

In the U.S., we tend to finish dinner and immediately hit the couch but adding 10-minute walk immediately after your largest meal significantly blunts blood sugar spikes.

It is the most efficient ten minutes of movement you can do for longevity.

My rule is simple: Shoes by the door. Don’t even look at the couch until you’ve seen the sunset. Even if it’s cold, dress for the weather. You’ll feel the results in your digestion and your mood almost instantly.

De-Engineer Your Home for “Vertical Living”

Traditional Italian homes aren’t “ergonomic.” You’re constantly bending, reaching, and climbing. Modern American homes are designed for maximum convenience, which—ironically—is a disaster for our joints.

We need to remove some of that convenience to force functional movement:

  • The Overhead Reach Audit: Move your daily coffee mugs to the highest shelf. Start every morning with a full-body stretch just to get your caffeine.
  • Deep Storage: Put your heaviest pots in the back of the lowest cabinets. Every time you make dinner, you’re performing a series of deep squats and hinges.
  • The Floor Reset: Ditch the chair for small tasks. Fold your laundry on the floor. The “sit-to-stand” motion is one of the strongest predictors of how long you’ll live.

Movement isn’t something you “do” at 5:00 PM; it’s how you live.

When you stop moving this happens:

Muscle mass begins to decline.

Metabolic health shifts in the wrong direction

Balance erodes.

Your life gets smaller.

Use the above ideas or additional ways to move every 30 minutes and add years to your life.

Last, before I go, if you missed the chance to try the latest harvest of the highest quality fresh, extra virgin olive oil, here’s the link where you can find it.

You will find less and less of this high quality in the U.S. as most imports have stopped due to tariffs. Deliba EVOO is a rare opportunity to get the best. Their website and order form tells the rest.

That’s it for now! See you next time!
