Adding healthful monounsaturated fat, polyphenols (a special class of nutrients we often call antiovidants) and vitamis C from the juice of a fresh lemon in the morning or anyting in the day is a wonderful way elevate your nutrition. I take my 2 tablespoons of EVOO with a squeeze of lemon juice every morning.
The important thing however is to do this with olive oil that’s high in polyphenols and of course extra virgin (EVOO.) I’ve been covering this topic in many of the videos on my channel here. The truth is not all olive oil is created equally. Consuming olive oil that isn’t of good quality and lacks nutrients will add little more than fat to the diet. I’ve seen many videos on You Tube recommending the above daily addition of olive oil “shots” but sadly, there is no education on the wide range of olive oil quality – some good, some not so good and some I wouldn’t recomment.
The labeling of olive oil has become complex and confusing for most peopel and rightly so.
Here a are some of the things you will want to look for:
Harvest date on the label. If there is no harvest date there’s no way of knowing how old the oil is. Old olive oil can become rancid,
Avoid olive oil in plastic bottles. The chemicals used to produce plastic can leach into the oil.
Only buy olive oil in dark glass bottles which keeps damaging light out of the product.
There are many more things to consider. If you would like a full checklist of components of high quality olive oil you can download a checklist here:
If you aren’t able to find high quality olive oil here’s a link to a small grower that I recommend and use their EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) . I trust their quality and I’ve looked for several years for a consitent sustainable source.
