Experience the "real" Sicily!

Granted, there are many ways to visit Italy but experiencing the real authentic Italy can be rare. If boarding a bus at dawn each day, seeing tourist attractions and returning home exhausted is not what you are looking for, then this Italy travel itinerary is for you.   

In other words, you may want to experience the “real” Italy and to live its lifestyle on a fully guided tour with me – an Italian speaking citizen of Italy, and in Sicily local English speaking guides,  at a pace that’s naturally relaxing.

Plus, group size is small for this trip – 20 people adding to this unique experience!

    Depart for Sicily – either from Chicago O’Hare or other airport depending on your location in the U.S.

  • October 1, 2024

    Arrtive in Catania, Sicily - Fontanarossa Airport.

    Our private transfer awaits to take us to the hotel. Check in at the hotel and relax. Group “meet and greet” dinner at a local restaurant in Catania. Relax from travel as you anticipate the beauty, culture and experiences that await!

  • October 2, 2024

    Catania

    Following a leisurely breakfast, you will discover the beauty of this city with a guided English-speaking walking tour (duration two hours and a half.)

    Catania is situated at the foot of Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, and overlooks the eastern coast of Sicily. It’s the undisputed capital of Sicilian Baroque architecture.

    The city’s emblem, an elephant sculpted from black lava dating back to Roman times, greets you in Piazza Duomo, in the heart of the city. We’ll visit many other incredibly characteristic points like the popular Markets and fish Markets you will not miss, the Ursino Castel, Palazzo Biscari, just to mention few of them.

    Later in the day we will visit a local winery (25 minutes from the center of Catania) and learn all the hidden secrets which makes wine, near the volcano, so special.

    A tour of the Winery and local dinner will end your day, before returning to the Hotel.

  • October 3, 2024

    Siracusa and the baroque island of Ortygia

    Following an elegant breakfast at the hotel, we will depart for Syracuse (Siracusa as it is known in Italian) is one of the most beautiful places in Sicily and, as many say, in the whole of Italy.

    A historical town with an important past, Siracusa has a beautiful city center with a breathtaking duomo and an archaeological park with beautiful ruins from Greek and Roman times.

    Syracuse is a thousand-year-old city whose origins lie in the remote past, but which remains eternally splendid.

    We’ll also visit the small Baroque Island of Ortigia in the historic center of Syracuse, widely considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Sicily.

    After visiting Siracusa and Ortygia your driver will bring you back to Catania.

    Enjoy a light packed lunch.

    Rest of the day and dinner on your own and at your leisure.

    Catania – Taormina

    Following our delicious Sicilian breakfast, we will check out of the hotel and depart for the most famous town in Eastern Sicily, Taormina – about an hour’s ride on our comfortable motorcoach.

    After having checked-in at the Hotel Villa Paradiso, you will have some time to explore a little or to have lunch on your own. We will meet our guide in the afternoon who will show you the main attractions of this world-wide famous town, including the Roman- Greek Theatre.

    Taormina has been the most popular tourist destination in Sicily for a couple of hundreds of years. It’s idyllically perched on a rocky promontory high above the sea. Beautifully restored medieval buildings, breathtaking views around every corner, and a giddy network of winding streets strewn with shops, bars, and restaurants make for a perfect holiday spot.

    We will enjoy a group dinner at a characteristic restaurant in Taormina.

    Taormina – Gole dell’Alcantara

    A new day begins with a sumptuous breakfast at the hotel before checking out.

    Departure at 9.30am to visit the Gole dell’Alcantara: Deep in the foothills of Mount Etna, the Gole dell’Alcantara Gorge is one of Sicily’s hidden gems.

    This unique landscape, formed from numerous eruptions thousands of years ago and carved out by the Alcantara river.

    The guided tour of the park is carried out by electric minibus, passing by the Saja path up to the Cava (volcanic rock wall). You then continue along the classic path of the Alcantara Gorges Botanical and Geological Park, which allows you to admire the inner and most evocative part of the Gorges from above.

    Included in the visit is the MOL (Museum of Land), to discover the Alcantara Gorges through the modern 4D multimedia room, lifts to reach the beach. Gole Alcantara Walking Tour and tasting of local Sicilian products included.

    After this unique experience, you will go back to Taormina and have the rest of the day at Leisure.

    Mount Etna – Agriturismo Scilio

    Start the day with a delicious and leisurely breakfast at the hotel.

    Departing at 9am, today’s experience will leave you a long-lasting memory of one of the most famous areas of Sicily, Europe and the World: Mount Etna.

    Your English-speaking guide will bring you to guided volcano visit in English, an expert for many years of this area will show you the marvels of this unique place.

    You will have a dedicated tour among the beauties of this unique mountain and volcano: colors, views, sensory itineraries, dream landscapes, diverse and splendid will accompany your memories for a long time.

    Lunch will be at an Agriturismo, where a tour of the local vineyards and wine tasting will fill up your day!

    Later in the afternoon, you will be driven back to Taormina, for the last night in this unique town, without first experiencing a Aperitivo at the San Domenico , Four Seasons Hotel where the White Lotus series was filmed. (cost of drinks not included).

    Taormina/Milazzo

    Enjoy another delicious Sicilian breakfast in the beauty of Taormina before checking out of the hotel.

    Our private motorcoach waits to take us to Milazzo – about 1 hour travel time.

    Enjoy the Sicilian countryside as our private bus takes us to another famous location on the island: Milazzo.

    Check-in at the hotel Eolian Inn, take time to relax, have lunch on your own. Later in the afternoon you will be visiting Capo Milazzo.

    Capo Milazzo is an ideal starting point for the Aeolian Islands, the Nebrodi and Tindari Park. The cultural heritage of Milazzo is based on the presence of churches, convents, monasteries, and noble palaces.

    Dinner is planned in a characteristic local restaurant.

  • October 8, 2024

    Eolian Island

    Following a delicious breakfast at the hotel, the day is dedicated to visit the two of the most characteristic and active Eolian Islands.

    We will depart from Milazzo on board of a private boat which will bring you first at Panarea, where you will stop and walk around the island and then sail towards Stromboli, where you will be able to see the famous “sciara del fuoco”, an active lava eruption into the sea, accompanied by an Italian “aperitivo”-drinks not included.

    Your eyes will be full of the beautiful views of the mythical islands for a long time.

    You will be back later in the evening to one enjoy and be delighted by the light show produced by Stromboli.

    Cooking Class and Castello

    Breakfast at the Hotel. After a comfortable breakfast, you will dedicate your day to both cultural activities: culinary art and visiting the Castle of Milazzo.

    A welcome Aperitivo will start the session, followed by a cooking class where you will be preparing local traditional dishes (appetizer,2 course meal and cannoli.)

    After having savored what you have prepared and cooked, you will have a chance to relax in the swimming pool or for some sunbathing activity, before leaving to view another unique and impressive historical location: the mysterious and truly emotional Castle of Milazzo..

    The castle, as the English-speaking guide will illustrate, is the biggest castle in Sicily, and it covers almost 14.000 square meters! Overlooking the town, it has now gained the status of National Monument in Italy. It was actually more of a fortified citadel where the locals used to live in. It was built on an area where the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs had previously occupied.

    Following our breakfast and saying goodbye to the beautiful island and lifestyle of Sicily, we will depart for Fontanarossa Airport in Catania (about 1 hr. and 45-minute ride.) Guaranteed – you will return home with new perspectives on living life well.

Here’s how to reserve your place for this amazing experience! 

A deposit of one half the land package confirms your reservation for this amazing excursion. The other half payment will be due in mid March. 

Payment can be made using a transfer with Zelle, or by check. Due to the very reasonable cost of the trip, I cannot accept credit card payments unless the credit card fee (3.5%) is added.

Airfare is separate. I always find the best pricing for coach or premium economy to suggest and send it early for best pricing. The group usually travels together from Chicago O’Hare airport but it’s not mandatory. Lufthansa (partner with United) airlines has been the carrier of choice for service and on time flights. I will be sending recommended flights for best times and pricing to those who reserve their place. 

Please note:

Experiencing Sicily requires walking.

With that being said, Italians walk, and we will be walking a lot.  Streets in Sicily are not smooth and paved, escalators do not exist. We will take walks in many natural areas. If you are not a fan of walking this likely is not the trip for you.
